Just took my TC29 into the shop for repairs. Front axle housing split and cracked where the two halves of the housing is bolted together. Looks like a couple of weeks out of commision

It just broke... Would you believe that. Just mowing the yard and it cracked like an eggshell. Really, I was pushing some piles of brush and the axle housing broke. I had recently tighten the bolts up on the housing halves, no I didn't tighten them sooo tight as to break the castings, just snugged them up with 6" wrench just to stop a small leak. But there was good news, took it to my local dealer, 30 miles away, and they rebuilt the front axle about $1500 in parts and 17hrs of labor. All was covered under the 2yr 1500hr warranty. Just a signature was needed to pick it up, nooo cash... good thing for warranties. ....

NH1725 (29hp) with 450 hours - a few weeks ago, I noticed an oil leak at the center-line axel joint and also tightened the bolts. I have not used the tractor after the retightening of the bolts. If the leak is a precursor to a broken axel, I wonder if there is something I could check/test before using the tractor so to limit the damage should the axal split. This tractor is no longer under warranty and cost to repair is an issue. Has anyone else experienced this problem? What is NH saying about this?

Pelkins: Is the subject axel with or without super steer? Did the crack effect both sides or just one side? ....

The axle was on a non-supersteer front end. Both halve of the axle housing were affected. When I looked at the Axle it looked like the bolts had started to come loose at the bottom of the housing and the top bolts remained tight creating a pivot point to break the housing on. I do not believe I tighten them to much cracking the housing. I had been using the loader and sometimes when letting the tractor down when you have the loader lifting the front of the ground it dropps very quickly when you actuate the loader valve. I have been making a better effort to lower the front end down slower when I get in this situation, since my warranty has run out. Alot of downtime and expensive repair. ....

I had noticed that the N/H loader bucket was quite large when compared to other brands of the same H/P. I went from the tc29 to a 2910 and with one more H/P I have a bucket roughly 1/3 smaller. I wonder if the capability to carry a heavy load along with the normal pounding a machine gets when using a loader would cause something like this. In addition, they have a very wide trac. By it's very nature, that would put more stress on any joints in the assembly. ....

I suppose that shock loads onto the front axle could stretch some axle housing mounting bolts enough to cause leaks. I haven't had much luck over the years stopping leaks by re-tightening bolts, but I always do try never the less. I took a quick tour through my 1710 manual. I couldn't find a tightening sequence, but conventionally tightening would be done in stages and be going across the housing for the next bolt. I assume there would be torque specs even if they wouldn't be especially valid for dirty stretched bolts.
I'm not aware of anything that could be done to lessen potential damage from a broken axle. I guess checking the axle/final drive assemblies for proper alignment might be preventative. However, that would be a lot of work to go through unless there was some indication of a bent housing.
